Christmas Candlelit Taizé Service
December 20 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
Taizé worship is based on simple repetitive chants which creates a beautiful meditative atmosphere.
Everyone is welcome to join our special Christmas Taizé service. The aim is to provide a time to pause and find a point of stillness in this beautiful form of worship at this busy time of year. This is a chance to reflect on the beauty of the Christmas message.
The Taizé chants are simple to learn and we will use recorded music as accompaniment to provide the melody and to give us confidence in our singing. You don’t need to have singing experience as the chants are simple and easy to learn by ear.
Chants will be interspersed with periods of silence, prayer and readings in a sacred candlelit space.
One of our participants reflects on this type of worship: “You sit with the scripture, you sit with the songs, you sit with the quiet time. You are invited to spend time individually with God during moments of silence, but that time is encapsulated by communal singing together.”
“You feel connected as a community, yet at the same time you’re having this deeply personal worship time.”
Taizé is a small village in Eastern France.
For over 50 years, it has been the home of a Christian monastic community made up of brothers from many different countries, speaking many different languages and, uniquely, belonging to several different Christian denominations.
Catholics, Anglicans, Protestants and others live and pray together, sharing a simple life and welcome the tens of thousands of visitors who come to spend time with them every year from all over the world.
What draws these visitors is that the Taizé community has developed a unique style of meditative singing which focuses on the repetitive chanting of short phrases from the Bible and other Christian texts in a range of languages. These are the Taizé chants and the brothers publish the collected chants in multiple languages under the title Chants de Taizé.
